bullet  General Notes:

Ivy was the second eldest of the children, and was baptised by Sr. Aiden Baylee, Chaplain in the Royal Navy. She went to school in Izmir (Smyrna), Turkey, where she met Robert Ashe, and they were friends from early days. When Robert returned from the First World War, they got married. Although both families had been friends for years, Robert's father was the Church of England parson in Izmir, while Ivy's family were Catholics. Thus, the marriage of Robert and Ivy was not supported completely by both families.

After the Second World War, Ivy and Robert returned to Cyprus where Robert worked for the British Army as Garrison Engineer until he retired. From 1955 until independence in 1960, Cyprus was wracked by riots and terrorist attacks, led by EOKA, a paramilitary organization that wanted to rid the island of British occupation as well as achive union with Greece. During this time, Ivy's cousin, Jack Hajiono (the son of her sister, who had married a Cypriot), aged 23, was shot in the back by an EOKA gunman. Jack was working for Cable and Wireless, and was shot on Christmas Eve by a Cypriot "friend" with whom he went to school, and who just wanted to kill anyone who was British.

Ivy had a house in the Turkish Quarter of Famagusta and, while she was sitting on the balcony, an EOKA terrorist threw a grenade onto the balcony. Ivy was able to quickly pick it up and throw it back. She was in her seventies at the time.
