As a youngster, Gordon was sent to study at the Royal Naval Academy and, as a cadet, he served in WWI. Exiting the Navy as a young lieutenant, he went to Cambridge University, and then emigrated to Colombia, South America, where he met Hilde Ahrens, married and settled in Cali, Colombia. He returned to the Navy to fight in WWII, was promoted to commander, served on various destroyers and then in the port of Halifax, Nova Scotia. After the war, he returned to Colombia and started a business distributing paper that still exists and is owned by his three daughters.
