MARY EDITH ANNIE BLACKLER ASHE
Mary was born 17 April 1902 in Boudja, Smyrna, Turkey, the daughter of Robert Pickering Ashe and Edith (Blackler) Ashe. She was educated at the American College, Paradise, near Smyrna, and except for a short stay in England remained with the family until her marriage in 1923.
She left Turkey at the time of the sacking of Smyrna by the Turks, and spent about six months in Malta with her parents, Ellen and Pat as refugees. From there they went to Cartagena, Spain, where her father had taken the Chaplaincy.
She met Arthur Trevor Mytton Poore who was working with the Cartagena Water Company, and they married in June 1923. They had two children:
(1) Trevor, who died in infancy, and
(2) Rosemary, who married Fitzpatrick Chuula, who became a Minister in the Zambian Government.
Mary and Trevor moved to Granada, Spain, where they ran a Pension, 'Carmen de la Canada'. They moved to Tangier, and during the war, they returned to England, and lived with her mother in the family home at 65, Birdhurst Rise, South Croydon.
Mary had a brilliant mind, and could speak fluently in Greek, Spanish, French and German, and had a working knowledge of Russian and Arabic. She was a voracious reader, and could discuss most subjects intelligently with experts.
Trevor died in 1979, and Mary in July 1984. They are buried in the Blackler/Ashe grave in Warlingham Churchyard.
Mary married Arthur Trevor Mytton POORE, son of Arthur POORE and Miriam HUGHES, on 28 Jun 1923 in Cartagena, Spain. (Arthur Trevor Mytton POORE was born on 21 Sep 1894 in West Derby, Lancashire, England, died in 1979 in Croydon, Surrey, England and was buried in Warlingham Churchyard, Croydon, Surrey, England.)
