BIOGRAPHY: King Henry II ruled England 1154 to 1189. He was strongly built with a leonine head, red hair, freckled face, and cracked voice. H ewas tough and athletic and possessed immense energy that enabled him to travel ceaselessly about his extensive domains. He was generous to the poor, a pillar of justice and an intellectual giant. He was the greatest of the Plantagents and arguably the most able English King since King Alfred (999-1016).

In 1155, he appointed Thomas a Becket as Chancellor of England.
His mother Matilda was Empress of the Holy Roman Empire due to her first marriage to the German Emperor Henry
19 December 1154, he acceded to the throne upon the death of his 2nd cousin, Stephen.
In 1155 Henry appoints Thomas Becket as Chancellor of England.
In 1155 Pope Adrian IV issues the papal bull Laudabiliter which gives King Henry authority to invade Ireland and bring its Church under thecontrol of Rome.
In 1164 Henry issues the Constitutions of Clarendon.
In 1166 The Assize of Clarendon establishes trial by jury for the first time.
In 1168 English scholars are expelled from Paris and settle in Oxford and found a new university.
In 1171 Henry invades Ireland & receives homage from the King of Leinster & other Irish Kings; he is accepted as Lord of Ireland.
In 1173 Sir Thomas Becket is canonized.
In 1173 - 1174 his sons, Richard & Geoffrey, lead a revolt against him.
In 1183 his son Henry died.
In 1186 his son, Geoffrey, Count of Brittany, died.
In 1189 Henry II dies at Chinon Castle in France.
In 1189 His daughter, Princess Matilda, died.
In 1189 His son, Richard, was crowned King of England.
On 2 September 1189, he was first succeeded by his son, Richard the Lioinheart.

Note: Nickname Curtmantle, due to the short Angevin style shoulder mantle he wore at his coronation after defeating his 2nd cousin King Stephen of Blois who had seized the throne from his grandfather, Henry I.
