Note from Rev. Pat Ashe
Anthony Blackwall was the author of the Sacred Classics, mentioned in Boswell's Life of Johnson. They lived in the early 18th century. Their daughter married the Rev. John Pickering (1706 - 1790). When he was 26 years old, he was given the Living of Mackworth, Derbyshire (1732), and he held it for 58 years. He died at the age of 84.
His son, Thomas, was born in 1757, and died when he was 22 years old. On his grave in Mackworth Churchyard is this epitaph:
Long time I bore;
Physicians were in vain
Till God did please
To give me ease
And rid me of my pain.
John Pickering was succeeded by his elder son, the Rev. William Pickering, born 1741, and when 51 years old was appointed to the Living. He died on 12 May 1802 after being Vicar for 11 years.
His nephew, the Rev. George Pickering, born 1778, was appointed Vicar in 1802 when 24 years old, and held it for 56 years until his death in 1858.
Between them, they served the Parish of Mackworth for 125 years.
