New Vicar sets sail for spiritual home at St. Just
THE new vicar of St Just in Roseland and St Mawes was licensed by the Bishop of St Germans at St Just on Monday.
The Rev Ken Boullier comes to the parish from Nailsea in Somerset, where for the past 11 years he has been rector of Holy Trinity Church in the diocese of Bath and Wells.
He studied for the ministry at Trinity College, Bristol, and afterwards worked in parishes in Herefordshire and East Sussex, as well as New Zealand.
Rev Ken is strongly committed to third world issues, and in his previous post was also chairman of the world mission group for the diocese.
His other great passion is sailing and last year he took a six-month sailing sabbatical in which he took small groups of people on maritime retreats.
"I'm interested in how the sea offers the opportunity for what you might call spiritual outward bound courses which explore such things as character and team building, and offer the opportunity for spiritual retreat in a marine environment.
"There are lots of secular groups doing this kind of thing with young people, but what we were doing was with older people." On the Roseland, Rev Ken is aware that he is also sailing into uncharted territory as the only paid member of the clergy working in a new way with priests in charge, Rev Jill in the parish of Gerrans with St Anthony-in-Roseland and Philleigh, and Fr Doug in Veryan with Ruan Lanihorne.
"This is a time of transition as we look forward to working in a new way and to welcoming a new bishop in the diocese in January. Given the recent history of this parish, I'm keen to bring some stability. But as we look to the future we shall be working to find a fresh direction and vision for the churches on the Roseland, working as a cluster and sharing as a team in the ministry of the area.
"I look forward to getting out to meet as many people as possible in the course of their daily lives, learning about the different communities, and finding what will work for them.
"I also hope to provide a chaplaincy for people of the sailing community and know that many second-home owners and regular visitors see St Just in Roseland as their spiritual home. With very busy lives, their visit here may be the one time they take time to think about spiritual matters.
"St Just is a church that reaches out to them, as it does to many across the world."
Kenneth married Loïs Mary ASHE, daughter of Rev. Francis Patrick Bellesme ASHE and Marion Islay JOHNSTON, on 7 Mar 1981 in St. Andrew's Church, Chorleywood. (Loïs Mary ASHE was born on 10 Mar 1951 in Woolwich, England and was christened on 20 May 1951.)
