BIOGRAPHY: King Henry II ruled England 1154 to 1189. He was strongly built with a leonine head, red hair, freckled face, and cracked voice. H ewas tough and athletic and possessed immense energy that enabled him to travel ceaselessly about his extensive domains. He was generous to the poor, a pillar of justice and an intellectual giant. He was the greatest of the Plantagents and arguably the most able English King since King Alfred (999-1016).
In 1155, he appointed Thomas a Becket as Chancellor of England.
His mother Matilda was Empress of the Holy Roman Empire due to her first marriage to the German Emperor Henry
19 December 1154, he acceded to the throne upon the death of his 2nd cousin, Stephen.
